[ History ] :
And now we cry because WtNV doesn't have its own wiki, or a character history on wikipedia, so I have to write it out myself. Edit: There is a wiki, but there's not much here :(((

We know very little about Cecil, in any real sense. He is a man who is not short, and who is not tall, not fat or thin, and who may have "black eyes" and wears a tie. He lives in the strange small Southwestern United States town of Night Vale, which exists in the midst of a very hot desert.

Night Vale seems on the surface like a normal town in some ways. It has an Arby's and a bowling alley. People work and go to school and do all the normal things people do. But it doesn't take much to get under that surface. The town is filled with corrupt government and police, demonic presences, shadowy hooded figures, dragons, tentacled beasts, and angels. Regular people engage routinely in supernatural actions, and a blood stone circle is considered a normal and desirable thing to install at a public park. Pens and books are banned, and no one is permitted to question the moon.

Cecil has a show on the local Night Vale Community Radio station. He reports on local news, traffic, and the weather. Much of what he talks about are local happenings, such as PTA meetings, meetings of the city council, or odd power outages. All the bizarre things that go on in Night Vale are announced in matter-of-fact fashion, no differently from mundane happenings.

We know that Cecil once went on a long trip in Europe and visited several strange places, including one city where he was trapped for many years. Otherwise, it seems he's always been in Night Vale. He was likely born there, and will die there.

Beyond that, we know nothing about Cecil, including his last name or appearance beyond the fact that he's of average height. It's speculated by some that Cecil is some kind of demon. I think it's because of references he made to having been on the air "now and forever", but I'm not sure exactly. As canon is ongoing, I won't make any fundamental assumptions of that nature, however I do enjoy a particular headcanon that Cecil looks different to each person who sees him. He's essentially a voice, a personality, and the rest of him is mutable - though each person will recognize him for the same Cecil they've always seen. If it's all right with the mods, I'd like to use this headcanon in Vatheon.

One last thing. From the first episode of Night Vale, Cecil has had a beautiful, precious crush on a new scientist who moved to town named Carlos. In the last episode, Cecil and Carlos went on their first date.

[ Personality ] :
The most important thing to Cecil is reporting the news. He prides himself on being a reporter, on uncovering and reporting on the things that he learns. With great courage, he has interviewed a mysterious hooded figure, reported on forbidden subjects like the moon, the Dog Park, and the Shape in Grove Park That is Neither Acknowledged Nor Talked About.

Cecil is a product of his town. He vocally supports the city council and sheriff's secret police, because anything else is a thought crime. He is unskeptical about all of the bizarre things that happen, and takes everything from dinosaur attacks to alien invaders in stride. He works for an unknown, violent tentacled monster called the Station Managers. All of this is completely normal to him, and he reports on it in that spirit. He tends to be quite optimistic as well, reporting on rather horrific events as cheerfully as happy ones.

Death is commonplace in Night Vale, and it doesn't seem to give him great pause. Once he made an error in reporting zero deaths after a dinosaur attack, when in fact there were 38 deaths. When he discovered the error, he reported it in the same tone he might report the mis-pronouncing of a name. He expresses condolences and sympathy at the deaths of his interns, but there's no true sorrow in his voice during those times. His most powerful emotion comes at times of personal stress. For example, when he's in personal, mortal danger, his fear is obvious. Furthermore, when he meets his doppleganger from Night Vale's eternal, bitter rival town, Desert Bluffs, he shows unbridled hatred and disgust, as well as horror at the blood-spattered state of the Desert Bluffs radio booth.

Cecil is also quite philosophical. For all that he seems to be overall cheerful and unbothered by the deaths of innocents, he does seem to care about his listeners. He offers tips and warnings sincerely, and often gets rather "personal", making editorials about real issues like being a good neighbour. At times, he voices personal concerns, such as when he had a rather solipsistic crisis and worried he was the only one alive in the world. He also expresses sincere emotion whenever he talks about "beautiful, perfect" Carlos. Sometimes, he reflects aloud about the nature of life, or death, or what the moon might be.

Finally, one definitely doesn't want to cross Cecil. He tends to take certain things personally, and to greatly dislike individual people in the town. People who might actually be vile, he passes over completely (such as the mayor, who probably consorts with demons, or is one herself), while people he finds to be "spoil sports", are "bigots", or who want to "ruin the town" he speaks about with vitriol, and publicly calls them off when they're being jerks. Telly the barber is probably the worst of these, as Telly cut Carlos' hair short, and Cecil publicly called him out on the radio with venom in his voice, implying that he should be punished for his transgression. A few episodes later, Telly had gone mad and wandered into the desert. It's unknown whether his madness is related to Cecil's anger or not, but it very well might have been.

[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
Cecil is intelligent, resourceful, and seems to be quite the survivor. He's living in an extremely dangerous place, yet he has found happiness and seems to squeak out of dangerous situations. He takes things personally at times - sometimes too personally.

[ Other Important Facts ] :
Nothing I can think of.

[ Sample ] :
This post opening is an example of how I'd play him. Possibly by the time you read this, there will be tags to go with it XD If you want more, please let me know and I'm happy to write a sample.

[ Questions? Comments? Concerns? ] : My plan for Vatheon is for him to cover the end game by making weekly or biweekly posts on the network as if he had a radio station, and to possibly actually get himself a radio gig. I'll ask players to submit interesting or funny happenings for him to report on, and do short posts in the vein of WtNV. Of course, he'll reply to comments, because it's a network post, not a radio monologue, and at times he'll also participate in logs in person.
