[ Character's Name ] : Masamune Date (western order, he'll introduce himself as "Date Masamune") [ Character's Age ] : 19 [ Series ] :Sengoku BASARA [ Canon Point ] : Post-Season 2 of the anime.
[ History ] : There is some information on Masamune here! To focus on anime canon, there are episode summaries here, but this contains a bunch of additional information. A summary for Masamune personally (since he's so special): most of his childhood backstory is alluded to and not explicitly stated in game/anime, but there are several things that can be safely assumed to be the same (mostly in regards to losing his eye: smallpox, valuable retainer Kojuro, etc). All of the background background you really need to know is that he's the young, charismatic leader of the Date army, Lord of Oshu, and 19 flavors of crazy for every year he's ever lived.
Masamune is introduced in the first seconds of the first season of the anime and shows up a Whole Lot™ after that, mostly spouting engrish and screaming at pretty much everyone. Both seasons of the anime focus on defeating whatever army feels like unifying Japan in the worst way possible: Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi, for the first and second season respectively. The first season is arguably slightly less defining for Masamune as a character compared to the second, as all that really happens there is... he meets his eternal rival, Sanada Yukimura, fights some fights, gets shot, wakes up, gets knocked out again so his retainer can run some errands (read: rescue Date's abducted soldiers) that he's too injured to do himself post-getting shot, and then gets better and runs along to beat up Oda Nobunaga with the power of himself. ... And everyone else too, I suppose.
The second season, however, is a bit more humbling for him as a person. Katakura Kojuro, his strategist, right-hand man, "right eye", and the one responsible for helping guard his back is kidnapped by strategist of the opposing army (Takenaka Hanbei)... which frankly causes Masamune to flip tables. There's a whole lot of information here revealed from his beginning days as a lord; he charged into a battle to unify Oshu hastily and caused a crapload of casualties, which later prompted a I'M GOING TO KILL MYSELF SO YOU EXPERIENCE LOSS moment from Kojuro and a FINE SHUT UP I WON'T LET ANYONE DIE DON'T KILL YOURSELF response from Masamune. Back to the present, and Masamune's running around a bit after Kojuro gets kidnapped, almost gets invaded by the Toyotomi, and comes out of that battle with a scratch on his back from Takenaka Hanbei. It's symbolic, yes.
Afterwards, Masamune decides to rush over to Osaka Castle and get back his Right Eye. This pretty much ends with him picking up Chosokabe Motochika, resident Pirate, getting blasted in the face by Matsunaga Hisahide, resident Jerk, surviving that, and then splitting up with Motochika once Kojuro comes back after freeing himself since Masamune's rescue attempt took forever. With that, Masamune ends it off with rushing to Odawara instead of Osaka, since turns out that's where Hideyoshi is. He smashes him up a bit and then kills him with a convenient power-up, because that's how he rolls. Good end? Good end.
[ Personality ] :
Masamune Date's a samurai who's made a pretty good name for himself in his time, both as a young general and a formidable foe, regardless of his age. Known throughout Feudal Japan as the "One-Eyed Dragon", most of his time on screen is spent spouting obscene English phrases in historical Japan ( don't ask us how that works either ) or making lightning fall out of the sky ( don't ask about that either ). If that's not hint enough that Masamune's one hell of a guy, well then. We don't know what is.
Needless to say, however, that even if you take away the Engrish and Lightning, you've still got a pretty striking man. Masamune's the young commander of the Date army, and he's pretty much an eccentric guy in a series full of eccentric guys. Of course, this isn't a bad thing--when it comes to leading, Masamune's got a pretty solid idea on how to do it, judging from the loyalty of his followers. It might have to do with the fact that he's essentially got the qualities of a pretty good leader, both outside and battlefield and inside the battlefield.
To start off, Masamune is more often than not seen taking things a little lightly. He acts cool. It's his style, and he likes to portray that whenever possible. Horse with motorcycle handlebars? Check. Eyepatch? Check. Six swords? Check. When it comes to keeping a cool-head, Masamune's good. Really good. This is mainly due to the fact that he knows he's good. His confidence, while motivational to his troops and slightly admirable to see, can be a bit of a double-edged sword. He's incredibly cocky, with a side of copious amounts of ambition--instead of caution, he'll welcome any big threat with an "oh you came to me so I can beat you up". When Masamune walks into a fight, he walks in fully expecting to win. You'd think you'd be a little scared by a mammoth showing up after you've finished fighting a crapload of armies, but no.
Masamune's got this, guys.
Despite being a bit of a loose cannon, it should be noted that Masamune's a Good Guy. No, really. He'll cooly play off his good tasks whenever possible, but you have to note that he has a whole gang that loves him greatly. While some other generals use fear to surpress their armies, Masamune uses loyalty--every single one of them are prepared to die for him, and he's prepared to fight to hell and back in return. When it comes to trust, once you're pegged as one of his own, you are one of his own. He's dependable and most of the time he trusts that people are the same way to him. He's got a very big "group mentality", where people who're taken in under his care are all worth the same, and no one is disposable.
While he's a bit (very) reckless and prideful when it comes to strategic retreats and giving up fights when he's down, Masamune is by no means unintelligent. He's perceptive and capable of handling tough situations on his own (though that's more of Kojuro, his right-hand man's thing), and more often than not he can see through people's true intentions. Granted, while he's got some capabilities in strategizing, he's by no means a genius in it. He'd much rather prefer to get things done through strength and his own skills, and his tendency to get impulsive when it comes to battle and personal attachments (read: his army). He'll understand situations and respond to them accordingly, but he never really takes or creates the most efficient path on his own. He trusts his army enough to pick up the rest! He just does the hard stuff that needs to be done.
Besides that, though, Masamune's kind of a pleasant guy. He never has malicious intentions--in fact, meet him and he'll be casual and friendly, if not a little weird (because really, he's a samurai spouting engrish phrases and dressed like... he's dressed), but never really mean. Despite his "cool" behaviour, he's got a fair bit of energy for the things he's interested in, and he shows it. Cooly.
And that, friends, is the One-Eyed Dragon.
[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
If we had to focus on the most obvious strengths Masamune has, it would be his physical abilities. Of course, we're not just talking about his overcompensation with six swords--he's good at fighting with one just fine, mainly because he's just good at it. Personality-wise, what's most evident with him is overwhelming charisma and incredibly willpower; it's quite easy to like or respect him despite his slightly uncontrollable behaviour, and it's also quite easy to see that he does whatever he pleases and won't stop. What's less obvious, however, is his intelligence and observational skills--he's not an amazing strategist (that's Kojuro's job, and usually his physical strength fills in the gaps), but he is a competent one at least, and he's very good at analyzing both situations and people.
If there's one "negative" thing that Masamune knows he is (read: Kojuro won't stop complaining about it), it's reckless. He has a tendency to charge into situations merely because they're there and he has to, and despite his intelligence he can sometimes be quite poor at planning ahead. In general, Masamune can be extremely prideful sometimes, which both aids and hurts him sometimes. When he's scorned it's rather hard for him to forget it, and that can sometimes impede his judgement. He spent most of the game bent on revenge for one guy who beat him up once, and almost killed his ETERNAL RIVAL merely because he was in the way. In the anime, he showcases this lovely little trait by being extremely bitter about almost dying... for a long time. His stubbornness means he won't exactly turn tail and run from a fight even when it seems like he'll lose and possibly be executed on the spot, so. He can be kind of ridiculous sometimes.
[ Other Important Facts ] :
- His abilities often end up defying physics. Powers include summoning lightning from the sky, being able to fight in mid-air, blowing apart buildings, and manifesting a giant dragon magnet thing that he later stabs through and explodes for maximum damage. His entire existence defies physics, really.
- Masamune seasons his words with a crap load of Engrish phrases, mainly used for emphasizing whatever he feels like stating at the moment. Does anyone actually understand what he's saying? PROBABLY NOT. Does he actually care? Nope.
- He had smallpox as a child, and is either blind in his right eye or he just. Doesn't have one. The story goes that his retainer, Katakura Kojuro, gouged it out, but it's only been referenced and never explicitly stated.
