Riku has a significant roster of (mostly Dark-based/themed) special attacks, a list of which (including effects) can be found on this wiki article. In addition to the ability to weild more Keyblades than the Way to the Dawn, he possesses remarkable agility and athleticism, as well as discipline in hand-to-hand combat.
On the other hand, for all his adaptability, he can be obnoxiously headstrong, particularly when it comes to changing his mind about something once it's made up. In this regard, King Mickey, Kairi and Sora are his social litmus test, helping him to try to see things from other people's perspectives and make a wiser decision. Private to a fault, communication is frequently a reason for his missteps, as a result.
His guilty conscience and wariness about the Darkness in his heart and the mistakes he made while under its sway continue to wear on him, and although he has taken great strides to grow in this regard he is still plagued with uncertainty.

( Sample ) : Undertow is every Destiny Island child's boogeyman, the invisible enemy that lurks beneath the waves, pulling the unwary deeper, deeper into the sea's embrace until the unfortunate's lungs are empty of air and they are lost. Undertow, a monstrous and nearly irresistible force, like the current that pounds its way relentlessly down the flooded hallway.
Fortunately, Riku has and always will be a strong swimmer, and has the benefit of ample availability of hand-holds; picking his way up to a quickly diminishing pocket of air, he breaks the churning surface, takes two huge gulps of oxygen, and dives again. Just a little further and he'll find the stairs up, where there's still air and, even more importantly, the two people who at this moment are all that matter in the world.
It's laughable, really. They've saved the world -- all worlds, at least in their universe -- and yet the unmitigated power of an unbridled sea is still enough to make his stomach twist with dread. He isn't too late. Sora is undoubtedly trying his best to energetically find a way out of the building they've been trapped in, and Kairi is keeping him from doing anything too reckless, too rash. Neither of them would lose hope. Riku's hand broke the surface again, grabbing hold of the bannister at the top of the stairs, dragging him from the rushing water and up through a spray of saltwater that stings his eyes, gushing in through a window already hollowed out by pressure.
He could swear he had heard a voice, and his heart leapt with tentative optimism. "I'm coming! Don't move!" As he charged down the upstairs passageway, water beginning to lap at his ankles, he lost his footing and caught himself against a doorframe as a tremendous sound shook the bubble. The massive sea creature had decided to resume throwing itself against the barrier. It had already cracked, and the time they had to flee to the elevator and get to the island above was swiftly dwindling. Perhaps they had already run out of time.
No way! Kairi and Sora were still holding on, and so would he! He began pounding on doors as he passed them, and he was on to his fourth try when he heard a responding knock. "Finally--" Riku rounded on the door, and found it, unsurprisingly, unlocked. Of course, the Keyblade--oh crap.
On the one hand, Riku found out why Sora and Kairi hadn't been able to free themselves -- a large pile of debris that had fallen from the collapsed roof had blocked the door. On the other, that pile was presently tumbling on him.
Nuts. This wasn't going to be half the cool entrance he'd hoped it would be at all.
