( History ) : Fringepedia, Fringe Wiki, Wikipedia. Choose the one that makes the most sense! Walter is being taken from the original timeline before the alterations after the use of the machine.

( Personality ) :

Walter Bishop is a man of dichotomies. He is simultaneously selfish and selfless, addled yet possessing startling clarity at times; a genius who can figure out most anything set before him and yet who fails at basic tasks like taking proper care of himself or remembering phone numbers. While his personality may sometimes seem extreme to the point where one would think he's simply putting on a show, when dealing with Walter there are a few things that always need to be taken into consideration - that he has had parts of his brain removed, that he has self-medicated more than enough to experience some side effects, and that he spent seventeen years in a mental institution that arguably did him more harm than good.

All things considered, he's relatively well adjusted.

When he feels safe, Walter displays great curiosity about anything that may catch his attention. Once he's become focused on something he frequently will demand that it be brought back to his lab and zero in on it until he's got a better understanding of it. The work doesn't seem to tire him either, he's always excited when a new case pops up. Despite his age he views the world with a childlike wonder, forever looking forward to the next mystery.

Conversely, when he feels unsafe, Walter withdraws. He's always a creature of habit (demanding to eat certain foods, always wanting to work in HIS lab and no other even if that means transferring something over a great distance), but he becomes even more so when stressed. If he's upset enough Walter can become practically agoraphobic, and in the alternate timeline in the absence of Peter, he does exactly that.

Walter can be incredibly demanding and self-centered. He often makes strange requests with little regard for how difficult they might be for people to fulfill or what the consequences may be (a good example of this is the lab cow he asked for, Gene). He can't even bring himself to properly remember the name of the lab tech, Astrid, until she gets in danger while babysitting him and he feels guilty for it. While his default is set to "selfish" simply because he doesn't stop to think, once he does he can also be very selfless. At the end of the series in an effort to atone for his sins, he erases himself from the timeline in order to eliminate the threat to Earth, separating himself from everyone and everything he loves.

( Strengths/Weaknesses ) :

Walter's greatest strength and greatest weakness are one in the same: his mind. He has been referred to as the successor to Albert Einstein, and very few things are beyond his ability to grasp intellectually. Unfortunately, that was beginning to become his downfall. In an effort to protect some sensitive information and to prevent himself from becoming a monster, Walter had William Bell remove select parts of his brain, effectively disabling him. The current Walter has gaps in his memory and is prone to flightiness and moodswings.

Physically, he does not have many strengths. He's an old man, and one that's used a lot of drugs at that. He's in relatively good health and he's resistant to sedatives, but that's about it.

( Questions? Comments? Concerns? ) :
Putting in a sadly futile request for the lab cow, Gene, just because Walter would want me to.
