Below is a place to thread out quick little conversations with the NPCs that aren't worth an entire log. Vatheon's staple NPCs will have postings here, and all the other new quest NPCs will simply be listed under the "Quest NPCs" comment header. Please put in the subject line which quest you're talking with an NPC about!

[He chuckles with a surprisingly deep voice, turning to look at Nanaki.]

I just might be at that. Are you studying to be a mage?

[findsrisks]

[She nods at that.]

Yeah, it's nice to be able to do something more active for once too. So if you know anything that might help make me even better at it, I'd really appreciate it if you taught me.

[What, does she think he's just going to teach her just like that?]

What would you say the single greatest weakness of a mage is?

[findsrisks]

[MAYBE.]

Well...there's so much magic out there. Fire, water, lightning...and those are just the ones I've seen here in the city. You'd never learn everything in one lifetime all by yourself.

So I guess the greatest weakness of being a mage is that there are so many possibilities right there in front of you, but you're limited by how much time and effort you can put in.

That is the problem, isn't it? But time is an element too. If you really, really need to, I think you'll find it's a bit more flexible than you think.

[He'll wait a moment to see if she gets it. If not, he has his ways.]

[findsrisks]

[That hint is enough, it gets the gears turning in her head.]

Wait, so you're saying mages can control time?

[thalassino]

Well, not control it exactly, just bend it a little. So if...

[And suddenly there's a minotaur in the library! It looms over the pair, and if she doesn't manage something fast, they're both going to end up crushed by it.

Were the hints he gave her enough? Could she bend time and cast a spell instantly to give them some space? Hopefully!]

[findsrisks]

[Well, her first instinct is to throw fire at it, so maybe? Even though she shouldn't have enough time to cast the spell before being crushed, she's still trying to. They were just talking about messing with the flow of time, so she's trying to focus and go faster than the minotaur, hoping that it might work.]

[The minotaur narrowly misses her, giving her another chance to try it. The tiny man steps up next to her, raising his hands and... it seems like the air around him distorts slightly. Moments later, a gigantic bolt of lightning crashes into the minotaur. He's still alive though.]

You try it, girl!

[This is how rpgs work. She's seen it once, now she can do it!]

[Video game logic is awesome like that.

After seeing it once, somehow it clicks in her mind. Before the minotaur can even turn around, the same distortion can be seen around Nanaki, and this time the fireball shoots out right away, smashing right into the minotaur.]

[Did she win? There's a bright light! The minotaur vanishes along with all the signs of battle, leaving just Nanaki and the small man in the library again. In fact, he's just sitting down at the table once the light fades.]

I find that showing is easier than telling.

[findsrisks]

Er, yeah, that was pretty effective.

[She's still amazed that she learned that so quickly.]

So...that's it? I can bend time whenever now?

Whenever you want? Oh, no no, of course not. I think you'll find that you have to be fairly desperate for it to work, and you'll only have the energy to do it once every few days. But still, it's fairly useful, don't you think?

[He takes out a book.]

Ah - and don't worry about today. That wasn't reality we were in just now, so it doesn't count.

[findsrisks]

Yeah, it's very useful. Thank you so much for teaching it to me!

[She'll go ahead and give the man a quick hug, trying not to knock the book out of his hands.]

[What? Hugging?! He doesn't seem to know what to do with that, and awkwardly pats her on the back before clearing his throat.]

Yes, well, it is my job! Here - you can take this, too.

[He hands her the book he was reading. It's not just any book, though, it's a skill book! If she reads it through, she'll learn the first level of Arcane Blast.]

[She'll take the book.]

[She likes reading, so it will definitely be read at some point.]
