[ Character's Name ] : Rita Mordio [ Character's Age ] : 15 [ Series ] :Tales of Vesperia [ Canon Point ] : Post-Game
If you want the full details, I have a literally novel-length version I can post and link up.
Rita's status after the game's events is not detailed as much as the full array of paintings in the credits would imply, thanks to little details like their directly contradicting at least one sidequest.
[ Personality ] : Rita, at first glance, is antisocial, serious, and quick to get annoyed... Often to the point of violence. The severity of her attacks is proportionate to her view of the individual - young, derpy Karol would often get a swat upside the head, while the older pervert of the group, Raven, was often kicked and even got to experience Rita's fireballs (which seem to be her personal favorite magic outside of battle. Strangely, the basic battle magics best for her to use are water-element). (Even Yuri and Estelle aren't safe - Yuri takes a swat to the gut at one point, and both get fireballed in the face during the play in Nam Cobanda...) She also tends to view significant things as inherently involving risk and sacrifice, becoming bullheaded about a decision to do much of anything in spite of the risks.
This impatient streak even extends to her combat style, which tends to be quick, efficient to the point of recklessness, and heavy on massive spells. (If she says "Blah blah blah," it's already too late to run.) She does not like fights lasting long, and gets pissy if knocked down due to the inevitable dirt and dust on her clothes from when it happens. She does maintain several techniques for fighting at a closer range, including techniques such as card tossing, but dislikes using them. She really likes using her magic, even in odd climes - for example, forgetting how hot she is in the desert by spamming fire magic. (Yes, FIRE magic. In the desert.) Out of the party, she is the one most likely to wonder about the recurring gag of Yuri being cursed, due to how often he ends up fighting and how much weirdness happens around him.
Rita's antisocial streak is largely borne out of a fairly large obsession with her research, and a still-present distrust of people. She, for most of her life, has believed blastia to be more reliable than humans, even naming them and personifying them. This partially pays off in her sheer level of genius in all manner of areas of science, and ability to learn things rapidly - but at the cost of severe social awkwardness and eccentricity. (Her tendency to personify objects is NOT limited to blastia.) Further, there are few ways to frustrate her further than to interrupt her research, at any time, for any reason. Quite simply, she is not used to any significant relationships outside of professional ones, even after a significant time with Yuri's group. And even after all this time, when something inspires her, she can run into streams of ideas, and gets a little too happy when something inspires her research.
She can warm up to people over time - particularly, this is demonstrated to Estelle, who went out of her way to try and bring Rita into a social life, neither having had a friend their own age before. (Well, Rita's a few years younger than Estelle, but close enough). Rita is closer to Estelle than almost anyone, to a level of dere-dere that may indicate something more along the lines of an active love for Estelle - not that Rita would EVER admit it. While most of the party besides Estelle joke about it one way or another (to the point of Yuri calling them "Ristelle"), it's hard to wonder if Estelle wouldn't be interested. This, in turn, has also opened her up to social relationships, at least with some people familiar to Estelle, over time. Note, however, that building friendship with Rita does not protect one from Rita's often violent tendencies - in fact, as Raven can attest, in some ways it makes her more wrathful, and she occasionally is (subtly) mean to even Estelle...
[ Strengths ] : Rita's level of genius, in the overall, is in the "best in world" class - at age 15, her raw intelligence and ability to quickly learn and adapt to new things compares favorably to the likes of such fictional figures as Reed Richards, tempered primarily by relatively limited experience - which can, and has, worked to her advantage in some cases (allowing her to, for example, when presented with the problem of having to break the only source of magic in the world to save humanity, come up with a basic way to use a new form of magic within a matter of days). Even books along the lines of the Necronomicon go into her head, and the useful bits come out, with no difficulty.
In no area does this come out more than in Rita's talent for spellcrafting. She's developed many of the greatest Blastia formulae of recent generations, and has presumably been on the leading touch of new forms of development - including mana and electricity-based devices - since the forced destruction of blastia in the name of saving humanity and the planet. Her spell range goes from classic effects like Fireball to the mighty destructive force spells of Ancient Catastrophe and Indignation.
If forced into a melee combat, Rita's actually surprisingly good with a whip or sash as a weapon. A dedicated melee combatant will almost assuredly best her, but she at least can stall for time.
[ Weaknesses ] : Rita has a hard time being social with anyone. She's lived the vastest majority of her life only incidentally relying on other people, her parents having died when she was too young to remember their faces. The result has made it so that the only people she really has much trust for, or ability to work with, are those she's traveled with for some time. Further, she hasn't precisely learned how to get along well with others too well - a prime example being her tendency to quicky resort to physical violence at anything and anyone that annoys her, most often emblemized in the form of the collaquial Rita Punch - which is capable of knocking the (for his age) terrifyingly strong Karol Capel on his butt even when he sees it coming. These antisocial tendencies also come into tending to her appearance - or rather, not doing so much at all. Her clothes are basically scrounged together, and hewn for practicality and pocket space only.
When she does get to the point of trusting someone, she tends to become more than a little dependent on them. In no case is this more demonstrable than with her increasingly dere-dere relationship with Estelle. Quite simply, when it comes to the princess, Rita's completely and utterly spineless, and can be talked into going along with any idea Estelle has - even when Rita really should know better. (Though, admittedly, in many cases, Rita hasn't yet had the amount of social experience to know better...)
Rita's intelligence can work against her sometimes. Every so often, Rita will get mentally sidetracked in mid conversation, mumbling about details on one or another theory. Further, she's prone to treating some spells as "beneath her". Further... She views money management as beneath her, besides the practice of marking her name on every coin and object that crosses her path, "that it may return with its friends some day". Yes, even food sometimes.
Rita is capable of failing common-sense checks as basic as "Don't pull a dog's tail to try and cheer him up". (Yes, Repede bit her for that one.)
Rita's only irrational fears are ghosts, and the secret ingredient in Yuri Lowell's cooking. (Both turned out to be perfectly rational...)
[ Other Important Facts ] : (Okay, I put Important and/or Interesting here...) * Rita's heavier magic was previously dependent on Blastia... But as she learns new energy types, she's likely to quickly relearn them, as far as Vatheon will allow. * Rita had an unidentified object in her dresser. Only Estelle has ever seen it, and when she did, the screen (besides her) turned black. Neither has ever spoken aloud the secret that is in Rita's dresser... * Rita's wiki entry links to a list of her spells, though it can't quite explain things like her infamous Tidal Wave loop (a combination of skill settings that allows her to, with no limit, cast the powerful Tidal Wave magic over and over again). * Rita starts viewing monsters as only existing to be defeated as things go on. * Rita seems to get along well with dogs, or at least Repede... But she's more of a cat person, quickly getting into character when placed in a catgirl outfit. * Rita's cooking is plain, but not particularly unpleasant. She tends to think practically about food, not having particular preferences. "It's all the same mush in the stomach, anyways." That said, she's a fair bit of a snack fiend and admitted (before denying her admittance) to losing sleep over gels (which draws immense snark from half the party - Raven in particular). If pushed to cook enough, she might threaten to pull out "It"... (Which goes unspecified.) * Rita is flat-chested, but does not seem to mind - she thinks large breasts would just get in the way. (Just don't call her names related to it - that will piss her off.) * Rita doesn't like victory poses. * Rita isn't much of one for prizes and honors, and doesn't consider published research papers a strong measure of her worth as a scientist. * In the US, Rita shares a voice actor with Disgaea's Etna, Bleach's Rukia Kuchiki... Well, a lot of people. Needless to say, jokes based off this could ensue.
[ Sample ] : Prompt - The city of Vatheon is under attack (again). Giant sea-creatures are wrecking the city (again). Time to prepare for battle.
It seemed to have been a while since the krakens last invaded Vatheon. Rita shoulda figured they'd show up eventually, and at an inevitably bad timing.
Like when she was in the middle of enjoying a nice, long nap. Even the nearest kraken's high-pitched, shrieking roar only narrowly woke the researcher up, and even then, she spent a few seconds covering her ears with her pillow, as if the beast would go away if she ignored it.
Then, she got up, muttering unintelligible curses on the pile of calamari while quickly slipping on a pair of shoes, and checking that a few items were still on her person. Goggles, check. Magic lens, check. Blastia formula, check - not that she needed it, but she still didn't quite feel right without it...
Oh. This'd be a good time to try that wand she'd bought from the Nostalgia Nook. A Maximized Wand of Fireballs, it had been described as... Honestly, Estelle could probably come up with a cooler name at some point, after Rita had used it to cook the stupid monster down the street.
Slipping the wand into one sleeve, Rita quickly headed down the stairs, and out the door, staring at the creature.
Naturally, she'd been the first to get outside. Why no one else slept in clothes they felt right heading outside in, Rita would never quite entirely understand - it was so impr-
Right. Kraken shrieking right in front of her. Staring at her, and raising a tentacle. That could only be met with one force...
"O flickering blaze, burn! FIREBALL!", she shouted - choosing not to use the wand this time, instead simply throwing several small orbs of burning energy at the tentacle. Encouragingly, the creature yelped in response - this one wasn't that strong.
Good. That meant that she could find the others soon, and finish off this entire mess. She couldn't help but wonder what creepy recipes Yuri had learned from who-knows-where for using the corpse of this thing... But then, she'd simply find out once it was dead.
