[ Character's Name ] : Ai Amano
[ Character's Age ] : 17
[ Series ] : Video Girl Ai
[ Canon Point ] : The end of volume thirteen, before Ai comes back from disappearing for the last time.

[ History ] :
Video Girl Ai @ Wikipedia
Video Girl Ai is a romantic comedy with science fiction elements: there is a magical video store that only appears to those pure of heart, and Yota Moteuchi stumbles across it after finding out that his crush is in love with his best friend. The kindly clerk at the video store lends him a video of Ai Amano, who'll "cheer him up". Putting in the video into his broken VCR, Ai pops out (broken, as in her boobs shrunk and she acts tomboyish instead of alluring) and she's determined to fix Yota's love life. Little did anybody (aside from the readers) know that she was going to become Yota's love life.

Blah blah blah, eventually Yota realizes he loves Ai. After a lot of situational angst over the course of thirteen volumes, Ai miraculously becomes a human and lives with Yota. The series seriously reads like a "what not to do" manual for relationships.

[ Personality ] :
As the titular character in the series, there's obviously a lot that can be said about Ai, and given that the series is - at its core - a romantic comedy, a lot about Ai is defined about how she relates with all of the other characters.

In order to fully understand why Ai acts the way she does, one needs to know what exactly a Video Girl is. On the back of her video box, Ai Amano is described as a stylish sweet-sixteen girl who'll comfort you in your time of need. That, and the big knockers don't hurt, either (Marvin Gaye's Sexual Healing comes to mind).

Yeah, don't always believe what you read.

First off, Ai is a Video Girl - the series never really goes into the specifics behind her nature and existence, but what is clear is that she is an artificial being whose existence is tied to a video cassette, and to an extent the VCR playing her video cassette. That means that in order for her to manifest, her video needs to be played on a VCR, and also that a human must intently wish for her existence to become real. As a Video Girl, she is also prone to the VCR settings - if you fast forward, rewind or even slow, she will actually become quicker, rewind, or become slower. It's never revealed what would happen if you press Record, but it's probably best if we never found out (though in a side story with Video Girl Haruno, Haruno has become melded with a male model, becoming tomboyish).

What happened with Ai, however, is that Yota Moteuchi played her on his busted VCR. The most immediate ramification of doing so is that Ai goes from having bountiful breasts to becoming a washboard in seconds, and in the following seconds it becomes quite clear that she's nothing like what her box description promised her to be. She's an unholy tease, swears, can't cook, bullies, has anger management issues, and she's nowhere near the perfect, mysterious Oriental beauty that was promised. However, even by the end of the first night, it becomes clear to Yota that Ai's rambunctious nature served well to distract him from his depression.

It's difficult to discern from what Ai was meant to be and what she ended up being. The main function of a Video Girl is to cheer men up (basically, superficial and raw sex - this is further cemented by the fact that Video Girls aren't meant to make emotional attachments, worst of all love, with their "customers"). "Love" is a taboo word - this is displayed by Mai Kamio, a Video Girl who isn't defective. Normal Video Girls can't understand or comprehend what love is, nor are they able to feel it. The Gokuraku Clerk who housed Ai for a bit stated that if Ai is a defective Video Girl, she's nothing less than a human capable of true love. Rolex's comments further reinforce this: "You get jealous, you act spoiled, you get lonely. You've got all these unacceptable emotions. You're no different from any normal girl."

Right off of the bat, the first impression Ai makes is a cheerful girl and "one of the guys". She usually wears more masculine clothing unless she wants to cheer Yota up, and the boy-clothes definitely help since she's rather physically active - she even goes as far as to refuse to wear bras because she "doesn't like how they bind you up". She's boisterous, extroverted, and active, and she is most definitely a meddler - she can't leave anybody in need alone, which obviously gets her into more trouble than she can handle. In Yota's own words, Ai's "rude, reckless, and manic... but she's the most lovable girl I ever met". Ai has very little inhibition (unless it results in more angst) and describing her as someone who wears her heart on her sleeve wouldn't be too far off. She has whims and follows them with impunity.

As self-absorbed as Ai could come off as, she's always intently thinking about how her actions affect everyone and everything around her. When a mood is getting too serious or depressing, she times an outlandish comment or action to lighten the mood. When she realizes that she's in love with Yota, she knows it won't end well (what with her playback time limited and the fact that she's not allowed to fall in love), so she intentionally distances herself from him, making certain Yota pursues either Moemi or Nobuko instead - only, this makes Yota pursue her even further. Then it gets flipped at a certain point where Ai pursues Yota aggressively when Rolex promises her to make her human should she be successful in being bound to a human man in love, but Yota refuses to look at Ai as anything but a younger sister. In the story's own words, it's a "sad game of musical chairs". Ai is constantly meddling in everybody's business in an attempt to make sure that the happiest ending possible occurs, though her impulsive nature tends to lend itself to making more trouble than anything else.

One of Ai's most redeeming features - which may very well originate from her Video Girl nature - is the ability to see the good in people. The first night she spends with Yota, Yota finishes eating her awful cooking, and Ai smiles, saying she "found one of your good points". This is a running theme in the series, where even if a character showcases nothing but despicable traits, Ai always manages to point out their good will and that they're not beyond redemption. Even with Takao Sorayama, who nearly rapes her, Ai tells him that at least he's straightforward with his desires and knows a couple of people who could learn from his behavior (of course, we later learn that he's still a Grade-A douche-tard, but I swear everybody else Ai points out good in is actually genuinely good). Even when Ai is struck with amnesia (being unaware of her Video Girl nature), she still exhibits her meddling traits and pointing out the good aspects of a person's personality.

If anything, you can't say that Ai isn't tenacious. She struggles harder than anybody else in the series to ensure a "happily ever after" for everybody as much as possible (despite ultimately that she's the only one that attains it with Yota) - this is illustrated that even though she's missing whatever pre-programmed memories to cook, Ai continually struggles to improve her cooking throughout the series. She also never gives up when other peoples' situations look bleakest - when Natsumi is in the hospital and wants to see her old boyfriend again, Ai risks her life to make certain that they're reunited before Natsumi passes away. The only times Ai seems resigned to "let things be" is when it comes down to her own situation as a Video Girl who's going to disappear.

All in all, with Ai you see what you get. She's not overly complicated, but she's not a Mary Sue either - she exhibits all sorts of emotions, but ultimately acts selflessly and for the greater good of the people around her, the people that she loves. Love is her dysfunction, but also everything good that comes from her actions.

[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
In canon, Ai's "lifespan" is connected to the VCR playing her tape, and to a greater extent the people who created her tape (Rolex is shown having the ability to determine the time of her video's playback even to an infinite time). Other than that the manga makes notes that in almost every other manner Ai functions as a human, needing to eat, sleep, use the facilities, and exhibiting body odor when she hasn't bathed. However, if the VCR playing her tape overheats, she'll come down with a fever, but this only happened once early on in the story and is never mentioned again.

As a Video Girl, Ai's only supernatural power is having "magnetism" (which is manifested by electrical sparks), but this is only shown during her fight with Mai and it's made clear that Ai cannot control it and is more or less never mentioned ever again after Mai is defeated, aside from the "final battle" with Rolex. On a lesser scale, Ai is also shown to have an almost superhuman ability to be able to read other people and no matter what, she's almost always able to pick out somebody's good traits. Her amiable personality is her most "marketable" trait, and she has been shown to be able to read people fairly well and make friends easily.

Physically, Ai isn't exactly superhuman, but calling her ordinary isn't quite right, either. Ai's shown to be surprised at how hardy she is herself when she crashes into several boards and survives, and even when she became sick with a major fever, she managed to recover in just a few days when the doctor that Takashi took her to said she'd be bedridden for weeks. She also insinuates that she cannot age; it's already odd for a Video Girl to manifest for a prolonged period of time, but when Yota revealed that he was seventeen, Ai exhibited awe and a bit of jealousy as she stated that as a Video Girl, she'd never age - she'd forever remain sixteen. (Then Yota gives her a birthday cake telling her that she's seventeen. Go figure. You can't do stuff like that and not expect someone to have feelings for you.)

Given the fact that there's probably no VCR playing Ai's tape in the game, it will not have any hold over Ai.

Through hard work, Ai has finally learned how to cook as well. She also has a knack for coloring, as she helped Yota finish his picture books.

[ Other Important Facts ] :
N/A

[ Sample ] :
"Vroom!" The exhilaration of the wind caressing her skin as she ran with her arms out as an airplane's wings was something Ai could never take for granted as she ran through the streets. Finally exhausting herself after several minutes, Ai couldn't help but have a grin plastered over her expression as she caught her breath. She never knew that not being tied to a VCR could be so gratifying! She was never one to take life for granted, considering her short lifespan as a video product, but she couldn't help but just be positively giddy, even more so than when she had amnesia and couldn't even recall being a Video Girl.

Of course, she had no idea where she was - this wasn't Japan, that was for sure. Then again, there was nothing left for her in Japan, anyhow; if Yota went to Europe to be with Moemi or not was his choice, but there was no way that she and Yota could live happily ever after. It simply wasn't possible, as she wasn't human. It would have been better if he got over her and continued to chase his dream of becoming an artist, to move on, to have a life. It was bad enough he wasted over a year with her, after all - all he got were a bunch of scars which would be a pain to heal, a missed year of school, and a bunch of pissed off women and failed friendships.

Ai would be lying if she didn't think it was worth it for her, at least. It was a lot better than being a loveless Video Girl who couldn't experience what she had, which was a family. But now that she was free, she could really enjoy life, knowing everything that came with it. She might even able to grow old! Well, she'd be a cool old lady, not one of the bitchy ones, but it was an option now! She had a future! She could go to the movies, watch previews, and not have to wonder "am I going to be alive when that comes out?" Well, she never liked watching movies (given that why would she want to waste two hours of her life on someone else's flick?), but it was an option now!

She was human, or close to it now. It was nothing short of pure bliss. Finally catching her breath. Ai decided to go exploring - there were no more limits, and she was going to enjoy herself.

[ Canon Point ] : At the end of the OVA 'Bardock, Father of Goku', as he's caught in the blast that destroys Planet Vegeta and presumably kills him or sends him flailing into the past if 'Episode of Bardock' is to be believed

[ History ] :
Here

[ Personality ] :
Bardock is, in many ways, a typical Saiyan. He's blunt, violent, confident, temperamental, and willing to kill in cold blood. What sets him apart from a lot of them is his loyalty--once he decides someone is worth his time, he'll fight for them without reserve. He's even loyal to Frieza, to a point--he knows the tyrant is a paranoid, insane creature, but he still takes missions for him. Likely this is more because he just loves a good fight. However, he's completely loyal to his team--when he finds them thoroughly defeated on Planet Meat, he shows shock and fear and disbelief that they could be beaten and that it was Frieza--whom they'd been loyal to--that had set them up. He holds the ideals of loyalty, honor, and pride extremely close and takes anything percieved as a betrayal personally. 'Traitorous coward' is about the worst insult ever in his book.

He's also incredibly stubborn and determined to the point of recklessness. Even after being attacked and badly injured, he struggled to try and warn his people of Frieza's impending attack, and when they refused to believe him, he took matters into his own hands. He took on an entire army in order to confront his enemy face to face, an enemy far stronger than he was, without any hesitation.

Despite being gruff, Bardock is also capable of some levels of empathy and forming bonds with individuals--you just have to be patient with him in order to accomplish it. He doesn't have the hero complex or natural friendliness shown by his Earth-raised family, if he ever did it was beaten out of him long ago, just by the nature of his society where the weak are not tolerated and forming such bonds is seen as a form of weakness. He doesn't tend towards using his strength to help others, instead naturally gravitating towards using it for his own gratification, but he can be pressed to intervene on the behalf of others. However, this is usually for self-serving reasons. He is not an altruist and generally shows disgust for or distaste with people who are weaker than himself and don't have any other useful aspects--for instance, if someone is weak, but smart, he'd respect their intelligence. In fact, he's probably far more likely to respect someone who's intelligent and physically weak than he is to respect someone with lots of strength, but a weak mind. He doesn't like children for reasons relating to this--they're weak, and they don't fully understand how the world works. He'd rather not deal with them, though he does get along with them when he wants to, mostly by not treating them any differently than he would an adult. He's able to make these connections of respect and even a bit of caring easier than a fair few other Saiyans would, even if he tends to be a bit of a loner. He's not very good at interacting with people--even those he considers friends--and holds himself separate. His emotional presentation is generally that of anger or distaste, at least when other people can see him. Despite that, he's not emotionless--far from it. However, he is incredibly jaded by the lives his people lead. He doesn't connect easily because he knows that anyone he tries to get close to--even his own sons--will be out of his reach soon enough. His new abilities will probably only enhance this further.

He's also fairly intelligent, though he's no scientist despite what the Ocean dub says. His mind is for battle tactics and he's extremely formidable in a fight, even one where he's outnumbered or facing a stronger opponent. He knows how to wait to strike, use the terrain to his advantage, and even use his opponent's strength against them incredibly well. He thinks very logically and pragmatically, and is not prone to fits of creativity unless it involves a way to creatively put his fist through someone's face. However, he does value knowledge just as much as strength and when he's not training, he'll probably be reading.

[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
Strengths
Psychic powers: Specifically, precognition. Bardock was given the ability to see the future by a member of a species called the Kanassans that he and his team took a mission to eliminate, though really he'd rather not have it, thank you very much. It tends to kick in at very inopportune times, doing anything from catching him off-guard to causing migraines.

Ki control: As a Saiyan, Bardock is naturally skilled at controlling his energy and has trained to make even better use of it. He can fly, use ki blasts, and enhance his strength and speed with his energy, and is said to be rather strong despite his status as a 'third-class Saiyan'.

Physical prowess: He also has his Saiyan physiology, which naturally makes him stronger, faster, and more resilent than a lot of other species in the galaxy. Leap tall buildings in a single bound, never gets sick, can withstand extreme gravity/temperature, etc.

Intelligence: He can be scarily smart when he feels like it, mostly in situations pertaining to fighting--battle tactics and the like, though he's also capable of some truly out there leaps in logic. He tends to downplay this.

Transformation: As a Saiyan with a tail, Bardock will transform under the full moon into a giant rampaging monkeybeast with shocking strength and speed. It's stated in the OVA that he has complete awareness and control during his transformation.

Weaknesses
Lack of social skills: Even with people he gets along with, Bardock is blunt and gruff to the point of being all but socially incompetent. He doesn't know how to deal with most people in a non-confrontational manner and will generally avoid trying to do so if he can help it.

Temper: Bardock's temper can get him into a lot of trouble. A lot of trouble. 'Get him killed' levels of trouble. He can barely control himself where Frieza's concerned, even if at any other time he seems calm and downright contemplative for a member of his species.

Tail: Grab it and he'll go down like a ton of bricks. Good luck getting your hands on it though, he keeps it wrapped tight around his waist like a furry belt At All Times.

Jaded Like Woah: ...seriously he didn't even realize Goku had been born the day before and he didn't want to even see him. His infant son. Yeah. He gives that few fucks.

Magic: Doesn't know what the eff it is, but after having psychic powers shoved onto him he's a bit more willing to believe in it.

[ Other Important Facts ] :
Weremonkey. Also his psychic powers don't include mind reading and he generally doesn't foresee people's actions, just the horrible outcomes.

[ Sample ] :
The Art of War. Out of the books he'd found, it seemed the most promising--over the time he'd spent exposed to humans he found them terribly weak, generally uninteresting, and figured they'd probably be purged sooner or later. The man who'd wrote these teachings--a military leader--made Bardock think twice about that.

Sure, they were still weak, if the Saiyan race had still existed one or two of them could have wiped out the entire planet's population within hours, but some of them did have a mind for strategy that he could begrudgingly respect.

Many of his peers would have scoffed at him for reading--a Saiyan warrior was meant to fight, not study--but there were few who understood the value of both strength and knowledge. Today was a day of rest, physically. Training constantly could be just as detrimental as not doing so at all. But being idle was beyond Bardock's capabilities, so he'd taken his book and gone to find seclusion on the island.

[ Questions? Comments? Concerns? ] :
Nope...I'll be putting up a permissions/plotting post for his premonitions, so...yeah.

As for his relation to Trunks, considering I play him as well...there really isn't one. Trunks would be of little to no interest to him and he wouldn't seek him out. Trunks might be curious, but would also probably stay clear. He has enough problems with his own full-blood Saiyan family member, thanks. This one is Gohan's to deal with. Aside from maybe being in the same room and side-eying the fuck out of each other, there won't be any problem keeping them from interacting.
